St. Andrew's Church -
A Brief Introduction
St. Andrew's Anglican Episcopal Church in Gothenburg is the centre of
the Anglican Chaplaincy of West Sweden. The chaplaincy has existed since
1747, with the present church being built in 1857. The Anglican Chaplaincy of West Sweden is also responsible for conducting church services in Alingsås,
Jönköping, Halmstad and Uddevalla.
The chaplaincy is part of the Diocese of Europe, which embraces most Anglican
chaplaincies in Europe (outside the UK), Russia and also Turkey. The
Bishop is the Rt. Rev. Geoffrey Rowell
and the Suffragen Bishop is the The Rt. Reverend David Hamid. A short description of the
Anglican Church is provided by the Britannia site.
Under the Borgå or Porvoo agreement of July 1995, the Anglican Church of England is in full communion with the state churches
of Norway,
Sweden
and Finland, and of the Baltic countries.
This means that the Anglican chaplaincy works closely
with the Swedish Diocese of Gothenburg.
There is also an Anglican Chaplaincy of East Sweden, with its
main church in Stockholm. It is called St.Peter's and St.Sigfrid´s
and is located at Strandvägen 76, with the chaplain living at
Styrmansgatan 1, 114 54 Stockholm.
The Chaplain is the Venerable David Ratcliff - Archdeacon for Scandinavia and Germany
Tel: 08-663 82 48.
