THE BISHOP OF EUROPE'S LENT APPEAL 2003
I write to commend the work of ROOF (the Russian orphan Opportunity Fund), which I am sponsoring as this year's Lent Appeal throughout the Diocese. Founded in 1997, and with close links with St Andrew's, our chaplaincy in Moscow, ROOF has been able to bring into being both work in its orphanages and, most importantly, in a Post?Orphanage Education Centre. ROOF is an outstanding example of practical Christian care and compassion, meeting the needs of children and young people and helping them to a proper confidence and wholeness of life.
I commend this admirable cause to the chaplaincies of the Diocese and pray that in this Lent and Holy Week, when we remember again the costly love God showed to us in Christ, we may all give generously to help forward ROOF's work with orphaned children in Russia. The involvement of St Andrew's, Moscow, with this project is an outstanding example to us all: let us help them take forward the good work they have begun in such an outstanding way.

LENT 2003
The Church Committee has suggested that Lent be centred on Friday afternoon at the Church, beginning with Ash Friday. There will be a Holy Communion Service at 4 pm, on Friday 7th March. Also there will be a Lenten Appeal, which the Bishop would like us to support. Specially made Lenten Boxes will be distributed, and they are to be brought back on Easter Day. Details of the appeal are given in the accompanying Bishop’s Letter.
FRIDAY AFTERNOONS
It is interesting how things develop in a very natural way, and seem so right. This is what happened with Friday afternoons last summer. Some of our parishioners joined the Chaplain in the Church, ready to meet whoever came in to look at the inside of the building or to find out who we are and what we do. Last summer we welcomed over forty people visiting our church. And already some of those contacts have come to fruition.
We are now taking the next step, a major development in the life of the church. From the 7th March the Church will be open Fridays from 2 pm (14.00 hrs) onwards for people to visit. There will be meditative music, and people can pray in the new prayer corner, which will be behind the pulpit and in front of the reserved sacrament. At 4 pm. (16.00 hrs) there will be a short service of Holy Communion. Choir practice will be at 4.30 pm (16.30 hrs). The Theological Group will meet at 6 pm (18.00 hrs). And occasionally at 7.30 (19.30 hrs) there will be a Church Meeting or other activity.
IN SPRING IT IS GOOD TO REMEMBER THAT HARVEST WILL COME!
Harvest 2002 was celebrated with a delightful family service on Sunday September 1st. The decorations were really beautiful and both children, adults and one small dog enjoyed John's helper Mitch. The service was followed by a ploughman's lunch and an auction of Harvest Goods.
